Using the available open technology, I’ve recently developed a small online OCR Nepali webapp. The settings are fine-tuned specially for Nepali language. However, this can be extended for Devanagari based language such as Hindi.
The online OCR is a free online OCR tool that specializes in recognizing text from images and scanned documents. Specifically, it supports Nepali language recognition, ad is fintuned for the same. Considering the accessiblity and usage ease, It’s completely free, with unlimited uploads and no registration required!

What is OCR?
Optical Character Recognition (OCR) is a technology which can turn scanned images of texts into editable text. OCR software analyzes the shapes and patterns of an image, recognizes characters, and transforms them into text.
What is the Devanagari script?
The Devanagari script is the writing script used for the Nepali language. Devanagari Script is also used for Hindi & Sanskrit languages.
Can OCR recognize Nepali texts?
Yes! Most of the modern OCR tools support Devanagari, to which Nepali script also belongs. Extracting texts from images in the Nepali language and scanned documents is possible using these tools.
How accurate is Nepali OCR?
It depends on the image quality, font style, and, OCR engine itself is. The accuracy of most of the modern OCR engines is amazingly high, especially when scanning well printed text. However, it is always good practice to review the extracted text for possible errors. However, OCR may still fail on handwritten notes and stylized fonts.
